The Optical Kitchen is an on-site workshop at Corner Optical where someone sits down and designs their own eyewear from the ground up. They pick a base frame shape from over 60 options, then choose a color palette from a full range of acetate hues. The pair gets handcrafted in-house and is ready in about two weeks, the same turnaround as standard eyewear.

Their name goes inside. Every pair is one of one.

How gift certificates work

Corner Optical sells Optical Kitchen gift certificates, which means you don’t need to know the grad’s prescription, their face shape, or their taste in frames before handing one over. They figure all of that out at the bench.

They bring the certificate in, spend real time choosing shapes and colors, and leave with a pair they designed from the start. Those frames go to college. The story of building them goes with.

Why the timing works

A Glenbrook South senior heading to campus in the fall is making a lot of choices this spring. An eyewear build is one they get to run themselves.

FSA and HSA dollars apply to most Optical Kitchen builds. Custom polarized sunglasses are a popular request right now as a summer send-off, and those qualify too. For Northshore families with benefits that expire at year-end, late May is a useful time to use them on something that lasts.

What to expect at the bench

A first Optical Kitchen visit runs 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much the grad wants to sit with it. Someone walks the grad through the shape options and the color wall, and the field narrows from there. Some people know immediately. Some take the whole time choosing.

Either way, they leave knowing they made it.
