Chin Up, Neck Sore: Office Lenses for Glenview Desk Work

It’s about 3 in the afternoon and your neck hurts. You’ve spent the day with your chin tipped up, hunting for the one spot in your progressives where the spreadsheet on your monitor comes into focus. Once the Northshore weather turns and more of the workday moves indoors, I hear about this at the counter in Glenview almost every week.

The narrow middle

A progressive lens puts distance up top and reading down low. Everything in between, the arm’s-length range where a monitor sits, lives in a channel that can be surprisingly narrow.

Glance at a dashboard and you’d never notice. Stare at a monitor for 6 hours and you end up steering the lens with your neck.

Why your chin goes up

Your monitor sits at about eye level, maybe 20 to 30 inches away. To look through the intermediate part of a progressive, your eyes need to drop a little, so you tip your head back instead and hold it there all day.

Add a second monitor and it gets worse. The edges of that channel go soft, so you start turning your shoulders along with your head.

What an office lens does

An office lens (you’ll also hear occupational or computer progressive) gives up the far distance. In exchange, the middle and near zones get much wider and sit higher in the lens, right where your eyes land when you look at a screen.

You can see the monitor, the keyboard, the notes beside it and the person standing at your door. You can’t drive in them. I tell everyone that twice, because somebody always tries.

A simpler option is a single-vision computer pair set to your monitor distance. If your work lives on one screen at one distance, that can be all you need.

Measure the desk first

Before anything gets ordered, I want numbers. How far is your screen from your eyes, and is it one monitor or two? A laptop flat on the desk changes the answer too.

A tape measure and a phone photo of your setup tell me more than a 10 minute description. It’s the fastest way I know to get the lens right the first time.

The prescription side belongs in a comprehensive eye exam. The power you need at arm’s length is worth checking directly instead of guessing from your reading numbers.

A desk pair earns its keep

A desk pair lives at work. It doesn’t get dropped in the car door or tossed in a gym bag, so it’s a good home for a frame you really love.
