Low Sun, Bright Leaves: Beating East-West Commute Glare in Glenview

You turn onto Lake Avenue at 5:30 in October and the sun sits right at the top of your windshield, low and bright and exactly where the visor doesn’t reach. Two weeks ago it was a nuisance. Now it’s every drive home.

Patients tell me the same thing about the morning run east, just in reverse.

Why it hits now

Around the fall equinox the sun rises and sets close to due east and due west, and through October it stays low for the whole commute. Any road that runs east to west (Lake Avenue, Willow Road, Glenview Road) points you straight at it.

Morning drivers get it eastbound. Evening drivers get it westbound.

Where the visor quits

A low sun slides in under the visor and lights up every bit of film on the inside of your windshield. That haze is what turns bright into blinding.

Clean the inside of the glass. It costs nothing and it helps more than you’d expect.

What your lenses can do

Polarization takes the edge off reflected glare from hoods, wet pavement and the windshield ahead of you. Direct sun in your eyes calls for a tint dark enough to handle it.

An anti-reflective coating on the back surface stops light from bouncing off the inside of your lens and into your eye, which matters when the sun is low and behind you.

A word on neodymium

Neodymium is a rare earth element added to some lens materials. It absorbs a narrow band of yellow light, and that shifts how color looks: reds and oranges come across richer, and they separate more cleanly from greens.

Drive past a row of maples in full color and the difference is easy to see. Your prescription still handles sharpness; neodymium handles contrast between colors. Not every lens material carries it, so I check what works with your prescription before we talk options.

Tint and shape
