Before the lake house: a summer eyewear check for Glenview families

The first weekend of June, somebody always calls from a cabin in Door County or a rental up at Lake Geneva. A torn contact lens with no backup. A frame bent because someone sat on a beach bag. The closest optical shop is closed until Tuesday, and the family pool day just turned into a trip to urgent care.

A few small steps before the bags go in the car make that call unnecessary.

Refill your contacts now, not Friday

If you wear dailies, count what’s left in the cabinet and add a buffer for the trip. Most lenses ship the same week if we’ve got them in stock. Specialty lenses for higher astigmatism take longer to come in, and that’s the one most patients forget about until the box is empty.

Order Monday, you’ve got room. Order Thursday, you’re rolling the dice.

A backup pair you’ll actually pack

Most patients own one good pair of glasses and treat it like the only pair they’ll ever need. On vacation, that’s the pair that gets stepped on at 11pm in a dark rental. A simple backup frame from our curated collection lives in the side pocket of your suitcase and earns its keep the one time it has to. Pick something that fits your face and works with your current prescription. The point is that it’s there when you need it.

Sunglasses with your real prescription

Driving north on 94 with the afternoon sun in your face. A dock at noon. Squinting through clip-ons all week isn’t anybody’s idea of a vacation. If you’ve been meaning to make the jump to real prescription sunglasses, this is the right month for it.

The Optical Kitchen workshop here in Glenview lets you sit down and design the pair yourself. You pick the frame shape from over 60 base styles, you choose your own acetate color from the color plate, and we cut polarized lenses to your prescription. Turnaround runs about two weeks, which lines up well with a Fourth of July trip if you start this week. FSA and HSA dollars apply to most builds.

Kids stay on schedule

If your child is in our myopia management program, summer is the moment progression catches up. Get the lens checks and any updates done before camp drop-offs and lake trips scatter the calendar. A short visit in June beats a missed month in July.

An exam, if it’s been a while

A real prescription update before a trip you’ve planned for months pays for itself the first time you put your sunglasses on. If it’s been more than a year since your last comprehensive eye exam, this is the week to get it on the books.

If you’re heading out before the Fourth, give us a call. A comprehensive eye exam, or a sit-down at the Optical Kitchen for a custom polarized pair, takes less time than you think. We’d rather see you in the chair now than answer your call from a rental house somewhere up north.
