Hard light, flat water: what polarized lenses actually do in a Glenview summer

By mid-July, Glenview light gets serious. The sun sits high, the pavement bakes, and an afternoon at the pool or out on Lake Michigan means hours of squinting at water that acts like a mirror. Patients come in every week this time of year asking the same thing: are polarized lenses worth it, or is that just a sticker on the display?

Fair question. Here’s what’s actually happening.

Glare is bounced light

Sunlight scatters in every direction until it hits a flat surface. Water, a car hood, wet pavement. When it bounces off something horizontal, the light waves line up and travel in one plane, straight at your eyes.

That organized light is glare. It’s why the lake at 3pm can feel brighter than the sun itself.

A polarized lens has a filter built into it, aligned to block light traveling in that horizontal plane. The bounced light gets stopped. The useful light gets through. The water stops being a mirror and goes back to being water.

Tint does a different job

A dark lens cuts overall brightness. That helps, but it also relaxes your pupils, which open up and let in more of everything, glare included.

So a cheap dark lens can leave you squinting at the same reflections, just dimmer ones. Polarization targets the reflection itself. Once you’ve worn both on the water, you can tell the difference in about 4 seconds.

Kids squint more than they say

School’s out, which means Glenview kids are logging serious outdoor hours at camps, pools, and ballfields. Their eyes take in more UV than adult eyes do, and most kids won’t complain about glare. They just squint through it.

Good sun protection matters at that age. And here’s the encouraging part: all that time outside is genuinely good for growing eyes. It’s one of the things we talk about with families in our myopia management program.
