Slipping in the Heat: Why Glasses Won’t Stay Put in a Glenview July

You push your glasses up, mow another row, push them up again. The frame that fit perfectly back in February now slides the second you step outside. Every July, someone tells me at the counter that their glasses stretched. They kind of did.

Heat relaxes the frame

Most frames are acetate, a plant-based plastic we shape with heat at the bench. That’s how adjustments work: warm it, bend it, let it cool and hold.

A string of 90-degree Glenview afternoons does the same thing slowly. The curve behind your ears opens up a few degrees, and suddenly the temples stop doing their job.

Sweat finishes the job

Acetate grips dry skin surprisingly well. Add sweat and a layer of sunscreen, and that grip disappears.

Metal frames have their own version of this. Nose pads collect skin oils, tilt out of position, and start skating down your bridge instead of sitting on it.

The fix takes 5 minutes

This is bench work, and it’s the kind I like. We warm the temples, restore the curve, true up the hinges, and reset the nose pads to match your bridge.

Sometimes the frame never fit
